Business owners try to save time whenever possible when creating and editing documents. One way you can save time is by restoring a deleted header or footer instead of recreating it from scratch. Microsoft offers two methods for quick header and footer restoration in Word. You can use the Built-In design tool to select a Microsoft pre-designed header or footer, or a custom one you saved to the Header Gallery or Footer Gallery. You can also transfer custom details and design elements you used across multiple documents from a document that still contains the information into another where you previously removed them.
Select Built-In Options
1.Click the “Insert” tab in your open document in Microsoft Word.
2.Select “Header” or “Footer” in the Header & Footer section on the ribbon to reveal a drop-down menu and the Built-In tool.
3.Scroll through the Built-In options until you find the pre-designed Microsoft header or footer you previously used or the custom design you saved to the Header Gallery or Footer Gallery. Click it once to restore it to your document.
4.Edit the selection within the header or footer area marked with dashed lines at the top or bottom of your document as desired. If you used a Microsoft pre-designed header or footer, enter your text in the text fields where prompted. If you used your own that already features text and need to make changes, highlight any text you want to remove and then delete or type new text as needed.
5.Use the Header & Footer Tools Design tab options that opened on the ribbon to help you make changes. When you’re finished, click the “Close Header and Footer” button in the Close section on the ribbon.
Transfer Headers or Footers
1.Open another Word document in which you used the custom header or footer you want to restore to your current document.
2.Double-click the top or bottom margin of a page of the document to open the header or footer area.
3.Highlight the header or footer details with your cursor and press “Ctrl-C” on your keyboard.
4.Close the document, open the document you're currently working in, double-click the top or bottom margin and then press “Ctrl-V” on your keyboard to paste the details in the area.
5.Edit the restored header or footer, if necessary, and then click the “Close Header and Footer” button or double-click the left or right margins or the page content area.
Tips
- If you haven’t saved a custom-made header or footer in Word, and can't access it in another document, re-create it from scratch. Select 'Insert,' select “Header” or “Footer,' select the “Blank” option in the Built-In section and then add the text and design details to the header of footer area as needed.
- To save a header or footer to the Header Gallery or Footer Gallery, highlight a header or footer you created with your cursor, select “Insert,” select “Header” or “Footer” and then select the “Save Selection to Header Gallery…” or “Save Selection to Footer Gallery….' option.
